Capoeira as an Educational Tool

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines (limited-contact) sparring, dancing, acrobatics, singing and playing percussion instruments. It is a beautiful display of artistry, grace and power that stimulates the eyes, ears and mind, with educational aspects in geography, multiculturalism, music and history. The speed and character of the jogo (game of capoeira) are generally determined by the different rhythms of the berimbau, a one-string musical bow, which is complemented by the pandeiro (tambourine), atabaque (single-headed standing drum), agogo (double bell) and reco-reco (grooved segment of bamboo scraped with a stick) to form a unique ensemble of instruments. Tampa Capoeira, a.k.a. Capoeira Volta Ao Mundo, performs at schools, childcare programs, libraries, rec centers, musical/cultural festivals and private events throughout Florida.
